Bloomfield is located just east of Downtown, and is surrounded by Shadyside, Friendship, Garfield, Lawrenceville and Oakland. It is easily accessible via Liberty Avenue, Penn Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard. Card shops, shoe stores, Italian restaurants, and groceries abound, attracting shoppers not only from nearby neighborhoods but from the whole Pittsburgh region.
Bloomfield's name was derived from the many wild flowers that bloomed there years ago. It is also known as Pittsburgh's "Little Italy".
Perfect for Grad Students: Shadyside and Oakland get much of the love from students, but the smartest choose Bloomfield, the city’s historic Italian neighborhood. Filled with markets, bakeries, restaurants and bars, the area is walkable and affordable. Plus, you won’t need a car: Bloomfield is a short bus ride, or a 1.5-mile walk or bike ride, to Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and their neighbors in higher education.
