Day 6: Playa Caletas & Corcovado National Park
Highlight of the Day:
|
Today, the Sea Voyager anchored off the remote Osa Peninsula and the environs of Corcovado National Park.
In the morning, we went ashore and walked right away into a group of white faced capuchin monkeys that were playing in a huge tree. A common morpho, a huge butterfly whose inner wings cannot absorb blue light and therefore appear shiny blue (the outside wings are brownish) flutters by so fast that it is impossible to take a picture of it.
We walked parallel to the shore partially in the rainforest and saw various birds, among them a majestic scarlet macaw who took his time to eat fruit in a tree, using his claws like hands.
Back at the beach some vendors had appeared and offered t-shirts, bracelets and other jewelry made of coconut or shells.
In a huge tree we observed a group of 4 toucans and later on more capuchin monkeys.
Back on board we enjoyed a short rest before disembarking again for another walk through the rainforest. There were humungous trees with huge buttresses, fig trees that had strangled palms competing for light and nutrients, palm trees with protecting spikes, a few tiny geckos. Walking back along the beach we saw a bear-throated tiger heron, mangroves black hawk, thousands of hermit crabs and a few very fast ghost crabs.
